Flash Encryption Release Mode Description

Postby GerryTitan » Mon Apr 18, 2022 2:36 am

Hi,

I have a small suggestion for the description of Flash Encryption Release Mode in the documentation: https://docs.espressif.com/projects/esp ... figuration

It says "Release Mode - recommended for manufacturing and production to prevent physical readout of encrypted flash contents."

As far as I know, there is no software mechanism to prevent physical readout (encrypted or otherwise) of the ESP32's flash contents. So I feel this description is slightly misleading. Maybe a better description could be "Release Mode - recommended for manufacturing and production to prevent decryption of encrypted flash contents."

It makes a little sense if you read 'encrypted flash contents' as 'the flash contents that were encrypted', as in the original plaintext, but I agree with you that it can be misread easily. Will forward this to the docs team.
