ESP32-C3 (External Flash)
Hello there,
I have recently designed and made my first test board around the ESP32-C3 SoC - which is a SoC that has no embedded Flash memory.
For the external memory I have chosen to use ZB25D40BTIG - 4M Nor Flash Memory, an equivalent to the GD25Q40C from GigaDevice which seems to be on the list of supported Vendors.
All attempts to flash an arbitrary ESP-IDF example yield the same result:
A fatal error occurred: Packet content transfer stopped (received 8 bytes)
The SPI interface between the SoC & Flash is most likely fine, so is there something that I should do in the "menuconfig" to get flashing to work?
PS. If you don't want to bother answering in detail, feel free to post a link to any resource that may be of help.
Thanks!

Re: ESP32-C3 (External Flash)
Can you post the entire output of what esptool says? Also, you're using an ESP32C3 without built-in flash, right?

Yes, I'm using the ESP32-C3 SoC without any embedded Flash.
And here are the connections, just in case.

Re: ESP32-C3 (External Flash)
How did you pick those GPIOs? They're certainly not the default ones for the main flash. As a reference, look at figure 5 of the c3-wroom-02 datasheet.

Re: ESP32-C3 (External Flash)
I was referring to the datasheet, in particular Table 6 and the following:
"ESP32-C3 features three SPI interfaces (SPI0, SPI1, and SPI2). SPI0 and SPI1 can be configured to operate in
SPI memory mode, while SPI2 can be configured to operate in general-purpose SPI modes."
Pins from 19-24 are probably the default ones, could it be that only some configuration parameter needs to be changed?

Re: ESP32-C3 (External Flash)
Those are the defaults for SPI2, iirc; not for the main SPI flash. I think you can still fix this by burning the efuses that tell the chip which pins to use for the main flash, look here for more info.
Generally, it's advised when designing a PCB to look at the hardware design guidelines and follow the examples there unless there's a good reason to deviate.

You are right, thank you for your replies!
Re: ESP32-C3 (External Flash)
Hi, I am facing the same issue with my custom ESP32-C3 board. I used the default pins for the SPI flash. I am using Winbond's W25Q128JVSIQ chip for flash. But when I try to flash the board I am getting
