ESP-IDF VS Code extension monitoring issues

Hi all.

I'm using the ESP-IDF VS Code extension. I've just being playing around with the hello_world example project. I manged to build it and flash it pretty easily, but I had some issues getting the monitoring to work. I could not get any output to display - and the project should print a countdown before resetting. After many hours I got it to work by sheer luck. I discovered if I unplug the GPIO0 to GND connection from the ESP32-cam board, then re-connect the board to my ftdi programmer, the output is correctly displayed in the VS code terminal. I really don't understand why this is. Is this expected behaviour?
