A bit sad it seems not pin to pin compatible with old ESP8285, it would be perfect to change the ESP8285 on some modules we have gaining BLE and more heap without have to redesign everything

Nice release anyway!

At a first glance I can't see much differences to the ESP32-C3 (with the exception of 2MB embedded flash and 28-pin package).
What's the reason behind naming it completely differently, following the "old" naming scheme?

This is more-or-less repackaged C3 silicon; ESP-IDF will detect it as such. From what I understand from the business team, this chip was mostly created for select customers who had specific requirements; you're not likely to see it 'in the wild'. I'm not sure why the nomenclature of this chip is what it is.

Note that the 'old' naming scheme isn't done away with; there may be more chips for which we decide that for whatever reason, they're not a good match to the expectations people have from an ESP32-line chip and as such will be given an ESP86xx or ESP82xx number.
