ESP-mdf mesh network replace router by ESP32 AP mode or without router

Base on ESP-MDF I want to build a mesh network like below:
1. Replace the router by an ESP32 working on AP mode.
2. Without router and assign a root node manually.

Can these structures work? How to achieve?
