S3 vs S2 for new design

How long will the ESP32-S2 range be in production?

We were (are) hoping to use an S2-MINI (with PSRAM), but all the S2 datasheets are now marked as "NOT RECOMMENDED FOR NEW DESIGNS", as of March 1, 2022.

There don't seem to be any close replacements for the MINI form factor with PSRAM in the S3 range.

Is it safe to use the S2-MINI for our initial design (lifetime 2-3 years) or do we need to use the physically much larger S3-WROOM?

Any advice appreciated

Hi mobbster2203,

ESP32-S2 should be in production for about 10 years from now, see https://www.espressif.com/en/products/l ... commitment
Yes, it is safe to use S2-MINI in your designs, no need to switch to a larger module.
Regarding ESP32-S2-MINI-1 being NRND and what is coming next, please contact sales@espressif.com.

I just check the website and found that the latest datasheet shows "NRND" in all ESP32-S2 modules.
What's wrong with ESP32-S2 modules? Is there any known issues?

An update: I received an email from Espressif about the "NRND" datasheets. Apparently the "-2" modules are undergoing certification and should be release late April.

(Specifically, I asked Espressif about the "ESP32-S2-MINI-1" and they said the "ESP32-S2-MINI-2" will be released then. I assume that also applies to the other NRND modules (but you'll have to communicate directly with espressif about those yourself)

Hope this helps.
