New Chip ESP32-S2

ESP32-S2 is a highly integrated, low-power, 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi Microcontroller SoC supporting Wi-Fi HT40 and 43 GPIOs. Based on Xtensa® single-core 32-bit LX7 processor, it can be clocked at up to 240 MHz.

Q: Is this "chip7"?
A: Yes

This chip is intended to expand the product line and coexist with esp32 not replace it.

What do we gain over ESP32?
Xtensa LX7
USB FS OTG
Support for larger external flash/ram
More GPIOs (39 gpio + 1 gpi, 22 rtcio)
14/15 ch Waterproof touch sense? & Proximity sensing
Improved SPI (OSPI)
Improved ULP (RISC-V)
WiFi Indoor Positioning (802.11mc)?
V2I (802.11p?)
Lower cost
External ram access from instruction cache
Auto-zero ADC
Integrated antenna switch
PSRAM encryption

What do we lose?
Bluetooth
Dual core
RAM? (320KB vs 520KB, or are we not counting IRAM/cache now?)
ROM (128KB vs 448KB)
UART (2 vs 3)
SDMMC
MCPWM
Ethernet
I2S (1 vs 2, no PDM)
RMT (4ch vs 8ch)
PCNT (4 vs 8)

Other Info
Sometimes internally designated as ESP32C?

Yes, this is what the Internets has mistakenly decided to call Chip7. (it's actually 7.2.3, as the 7 range also encompasses the 'old' ESP32.) Note that 1. this chip also has a bunch of incremental upgrades (e.g. more accelerated SPI support, less derpy ULP), 2. you'll loose a little bit more in peripherals than you/our page mentioned (off the top of my head: e.g. 2 uarts instead of 3), and 3. the chip is intended to be cheaper than the ESP32.

I have a feeling there will be also same chip with 2 cores and maybe BT
LCD and camera support looks great - I hope it is not through I2S only.
Also if all that extra 128MB spiram is fully addressable in continuous blocks this is a huge hardware improvement.

very cool guys! :D

Question:
light-sleep consumes way too much power in esp32 today...
Is this chip able to deep-sleep with ram-retention? or do we have to reboot every-time, like the esp32?

Is this will replace good old existing esp32? Looks like new chip is step back in all areas except cost and usb. 3 uart was already too low for general purpose mcu.

Iirc, the chip can retain full RAM, but as far as I understand, the ESP32 also is capable of that. Because the peripherals need to be re-initialized and the power use of RAM in general is fairly high, I don't think we use that.

I think the 128M of RAM is fully addressable. Note I don't think there are any 128M SPI RAM chips yet, but as soon as they're there, we're ready :P

Also, no, this will not replace the ESP32. Espressif has a 12-year longevity commitment on that, so that chip should be obtainable at least until 2028.

Sounds great. Will it or future variants still have CAN bus?
