Problems with nimBLE examples spp_client and spp_server

I opened projects in ESP-IDF for each of these examples. They built fine and I loaded them into ESP32s. When I run the code, though, I get most but not all of the output shown in the documentation.

The two boards connect and the client will write to the server. The server, however, does not send its notification when it receives UART data. It appears that the client has not enabled notification.

Has anyone successfully run this example? (I am using ESP-IDF 4.4.6)
