Using Lyra T Mini without ADF

Hi there,
I'm new to ESP IDF, it seemed like a great change from ardunio or platformio. But its turned out to be very very hard to know why certain errors are appearing. My goal is to simply record microphone data and send it via websockets. I know the websockets part, so really all I want is to get a binary stream of audio data. I've tried the examples in ADF, specifically for raw wav data to http. It just doesn't work, and its too absracted to debug.
I've now tried the IDF examples for i2s_es8311 and for i2s_std, and all the others. No matter what I do, I can't seems to even just print out the data from the microphone.
Has anyone used Lyra T Mini without the ADF? Is there any examples? My goal would be to use this board for testing, but then just move to an ESP32 and buy an external mic/amp. It seemed like such a time saver to go with Lyra, but it's been so painful.
