802.15.4 Support

I know it was asked sometime while back. Are there plans to support 802.15.4? Is the hardware capable of doing the modulation, etc? I am very interested if this is possible because it opens up possibilities for using ESP32 for zigbee and other networking solutions at an outstanding price point. Thanks!

I'm not an expert on the ESP32 RF hardware, but as far as I know it doesn't support the correct modulation modes for 802.15.4.

We are interested in IPv6 over Bluetooth Low Energy (RFC7668), which fulfils a similar purpose. There isn't official support in IDF for this, although I noticed there are people in the community working on this. We'd like to officially support it eventually.

There is also the Espressif Wifi mesh which was supported in ESP8266, and is planned to supported in ESP32 also.
