ESP32 connected to Atmega16U2 and Ethernet Switch?

Postby DerSpatz » Thu Sep 13, 2018 10:14 pm

Hello everyone,

I want to design a board that analyzes incoming network traffic from three different devices connected via Ethernet. Based on this input, the board then gives out certain MIDI signals via USB MIDI and MIDI jack (UART).

I wanted to ask if this is possible with an ESP32, if it is connected to a Atmega16U2, which works as a USB-to-Serial-Bridge, to program the ESP32 and to act as USB HID device?

For the Ethernet part, I wanted to include an Ethernet IC with 3 PHYs and 1 MAC, and the MAC is directly connected to the ESP32. The Microchip KSZ8794 should offer all I need.

Does anyone have any experience with the use of the Atmega16U2 as programmer for the ESP?
Does anyone have any experience with the connection between ESP32 and a switch IC via RMII/MII? Are there any known working combinations?

Best regards,

Spatz
