PSRAM with WROOM32

Hi,
I have a custom design based on WROOM32 that we now want to add more software functionality to.
We are unfortunately running out of SRAM space.
I wonder should I just migrate to WROVER32 ...... or is it viable to just add external PSRAM to the WROOM32 ?
I have read the postings about adding PSRAM on this forum and there seems to be mixed results, to say the least, with this approach.
The last thing I want to do is take a design which is now electrically stable and generate a circuit which is unreliable...
All advice welcome ....

RJR
